HPV

Why get tested?

The exam is recommended in co-testing with PAP Test / ThinPrep® to allow early identification of HPV infections and cervical neoplasms and should be performed regularly, every five years, by all women from 30 years of age.
Genital HPV infections are the most common sexually transmitted disease. In Italy, on the occasion of routine gynecological checks or organized screening programs, they show a prevalence of HPV positivity between 7 and 16%.
HPV types considered to be high-risk do not usually cause visible lesions, but persistent infections underlying major cervical cancer cases and are associated with other less frequent cancers.

What the test detects

HPV tests determine the presence of genetic material from the papilloma virus (HPV).
More than 100 types of HPV have been identified and some of these are considered high risk because they are associated with cervical neoplasms.

Tests available

  • HPV 14 high-risk strains consists of the analysis of 14 high-risk HPV genotypes (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68) on a sample of cells of the cervix (traditional or liquid).
  • HPV 28 strains (19 high risk and 9 low risk) consists of the analysis of 19 high-risk HPV genotypes (16, 18, 26, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 53, 56.58, 59, 66, 68, 69, 73, 82) and 9 low-risk HPV genotypes (6, 11, 40, 42, 43, 44, 54, 61, 70).

How testing works

The test is performed on a cervical cell collection (traditional or liquid) using the CE-IVD Anyplex™ II HPV28 Detection kit, based on the real-time multiplex PCR technique.
