PERSONAL MICROBIOMA

GENETIC TEST OF INTESTINAL MICROBIOMA

Why get tested?

Knowing your own intestinal microbiome is essential because it represents an index of health and symbiotic balance of the organism and, therefore, can be an excellent therapeutic and preventive ally.
Numerous scientific studies confirm that a healthy microbiota is a fundamental requirement for the success of both pharmacological and nutritional therapies. Personalized medicine, an essential tool for identifying this individual heterogeneity, allows for screening to support the nutritionist in improving the patient’s intestinal balance thanks to appropriate lifestyle and diet changes.

What the test detects

The test provides an excellent representation of the various types of bacteria that colonize the intestine at the time of sampling, offering important information on the “health” of one’s intestinal microbiota.

Who is the test for

The test is recommended for anyone interested in:

  • Know your well-being: the microbiota reflects our health in the intestine and improving lifestyle and diet allows for numerous functional and well-being benefits

  • Prevent intestinal diseases (inflammatory bowel diseases, irritable bowel syndrome), systemic (obesity, diabetes, allergies) and other intestinal dysfunctions where it is useful to restore or maintain a healthy microbiota.

  • Customizing dietary approaches for athletes: the metabolic efficiency of a healthy microbiota can be an excellent ally in maintaining health and improving athletic performance.

  • Intervening on overweight or obesity: knowing your microbiota allows you to integrate nutritional strategies for weight loss and to maintain a healthy weight

  • Prevent urogenital diseases: an evaluation of the microbiota in people with urogenital disorders is useful in order to make changes to the diet that can contribute to the resolution of urinary infections, such as cystitis or urethritis, of the genital tract, such as inflammations or infections from Candida, and avoid any relapses.

The test is particularly indicated in the following stages of life:

  • Childhood and aging: maintaining a healthy microbiota can help prevent allergies and limit the e˙ects of immunosenescence and inflammatory states typical of aging.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: maintaining a balanced microbiota reflects the well-being of the pregnant woman and favors the composition of a balanced microbiota in the unborn child.

  • Menopause: the maintenance of a healthy microbiota is of considerable support to the physiological and metabolic changes of this condition.

The microbiota changes over time, which is why it is recommended to repeat the test following major changes in diet and / or lifestyle. It is advisable to check every 6 months if you change your diet or take probiotics.

How testing works

The analysis of the intestinal microbiota is performed through the extraction of bacterial DNA from the faeces and the NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) sequencing of specific hypervariable gene regions which, being species-specific, allow to produce a taxonomic classification of the bacterial populations present in the intestine.
The sequencing data is analyzed, using special bioinformatics tools to identify the biodiversity index and the Enterotype, calculated by observing the relative abundance of Phila and resident genera. The values found are compared with the results available in the literature in order to evaluate the presence of any bacterial genera in excess or defect compared to the average, thus allowing to identify any situations of dysbiosis.

Reporting time

Results in 15-20 working days.

What to expect in the report

The result has no diagnostic value but provides an excellent representation of the various types of bacteria that colonize the intestine at the time of sampling, providing important information on the “”state of health”” of your intestinal microbiota.
Evaluation of the results with a nutritionist is recommended for any dietary advice, probiotic recommendations to take and any supplements.
